Weight:6 pounds
Diet:Krill, fish, & squid
Nests:Burrows in rock crevices
# Rockhopper penguins are the most widespread of the crested penguins and also the smallest.
# In some localities Rockhopper numbers have decreased alarmingly due in part to disease, introduced species and possibly warming seas.
# 'Rockies' have a very loud cry called 'ecstatic vocalization', which is used to announce their presence, to attract a mate or to state their territory. Also, by shaking their heads they cause their yellow eyebrows to fly into a 'halo' in order to attract a mate.
# As in many penguin species, male Rockhoppers are capable of producing 'milk' from their digestive systems which they then regurgitate for their chicks when the female is away hunting for food.
Extinct Species & Genus/Fossils:Icadyptes salasi
Icadyptes salasi was a giant penguin species from the late Eocene period, in the tropics of South America. Standing 1.5 metres (5 ft) tall, the penguin was much larger than any of its modern-day cousins. It had an exceptionally long spear-like beak resembling that of a heron.
Genus - Waimanu(Known Species: W. manneringi, W. tuatahi)
Waimanu is a genus of early Penguin which lived soon after the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. Discovered in Canterbury, New Zealand riverbed sediments (near the Waipara River) of the greensand of the Waipara Formation in 1980, the name Waimanu comes from Māori for "waterbird". Two species are known, Waimanu manneringi from the Middle Paleocene about 60 million years ago (mya) and Waimanu tuatahi from the Late Paleocene, perhaps 58 mya.
Genus - Archaeospheniscus (Known Species: A. lowei, A. lopdelli, A. wimani)Archaeospheniscus is an extinct genus of large penguins. It currently contains three species, known from somewhat fragmentary remains. The genus is one of the earliest known primitive penguins.
PenguinologyThe study of penguins.
Penguinology is the study of penguins. It is a distinct type of study, and it takes many years to perfect it. Luckily, we have Professer Flower, or FlowerGirl. She has been a Professer in Penguinology for 6 years. Here she is to tell us a bit about Penguinology. Penguinology has come from a separate world, called Pengasia. Pengasia has many entrances, but you have to be invited to go. Pengasia has 3 main languages: Penguinese, Pengish, and Pengwana. Penguinese is the most used dialect and you must learn this before coming in to Pengasia. Every 2 years, Pengasia holds the Penglympics. Teams come from everywhere, but are not teams by country. They are teams by species. To be Continued...
